Was driving my 69 bird today, ~65 degrees out, car has been running great but had to stop short and ever since it has been sputtering at idle. I thought possible heat soak but the car has been running at a very good 180 degrees. Has a new fuel pump, plugs, wires, and has good to boarding high oil pressure. I plan on pulling the plugs as I think they may have gotten fouled due to the short stopping but was wondering if anyone has had a similar issue. Car is a 400 4pseed with an edlebrock 650 carb, just a street cruiser. Any help or insight is greatly appreciated
By 'stopping short' I take it you mean you pounded on the binders, maybe you dislodged something. Could be the float or some crud in the tank. Maybe you dislodged a vacuum line or a plug wire came loose. How about the booster, if you have vacuum assist brakes, maybe you damaged an old bladder. In the booster that is.
Update swapped out the plugs, adjusted the idle to 1000 rather then 800 and its back to running well, when the problem was happening it was fine under load and revving the engine was fine but at idle it would just bog down and die out. I have noticed that when it gets around 200 degrees it does hiccup a bit when sitting idle at lights. I am not a huge fan of the current carb, its an edlebrock that came on the car when I got it. It is easy to tune and adjust but the choke is electronic and some times its great others its not. I do plan on adding a new heat insulator gasket.
Do you have the vacuum advance connected to manifold vacuum or stepped vacuum? Do you have all the A.I.R. pump and pollution stuff on the engine? If you have the vacuum advance on stepped, the vacuum port on the passenger side of the carb, try switching it to manifold port, drivers"s side. Having the vacuum advance connected to manifold vacuum will result in more timing at idle which will allow you to close the throttle a bit. That will give you a bit more vacuum at idle and may lower your idle temp. If you already have the vacuum advance on the manifold port, try adding a bit more initial timing and set your carburetor idle mixture screws to the highest vacuum reading.
I've had one of those Edelbrock EPS 800s on my car since I bought it, I wired the choke open. Just switching to a Holley 4150 style carb.
