I have a manual steering box with 200k miles on it. I can't believe the amount of effort it takes to turn the wheel when not moving. Is there something that I'm missing with the alignment or something else? I added a disc brake kit to the front which moved the wheels out about an inch. I did an alignment with strings and rods after the frame off restoration. It drives okay, drifts a little. I thought about a power steering change, but at $1k it's pricey. Would a new steering box help? If so, what should I look for? Thanks.
I would go the ps route. You should be able to get OEM parts from a range of years that would work. My bro-inlaw has manual steering on his 66 Mustang. It's brutal and it's a lighter car than the FB and it has a large diameter steering wheel. If you make sure car is moving while you steer that will help a lot.
Thanks, the guy I got this car from said his wife drove it every day to and from work. I can't imagine her trying to horse this car into a parking spot. Maybe it had skinner tires that made it easier to turn.
