Hello all I could use some advice. I'm seriously thinking of buying a 69 coupe. It's been totally restored and looks sharp. The kicker is - it has a 400 chevy short block in it, putting out about 400hp. They are asking 23000.
Nice looking car. The fact that it has been restored will safe you a lot of time and money and give you piece of mind. Although it always depends how much detail a restorer spent and his capability. The chevy block will take away from the car's value considerably and in my opinion is on the high side on the price, but it all depends on your likings and you future plans with the car. To me, if it had the original 350 in it and was partially restored it'll be worth between $18-$21k, maybe a tat more if all original sheet metal. With a non matching drive drain, I'd stay under $18k.
If you are interested in a fully restored blue '68 with original 400 drive train instead, let me know. All Pontiac, no Chevy parts.

My plan is to use it as a driver. Sunday cruises sort of thing. The people selling it claim they have over 40k into it. Not my problem , I know. I'm going to offer 20k and walk away if they don't budge and just continue searching.

Most of us have $50k-$100k+ into our cars. If everything else checks out you have found a good deal. It looks like an excellent driver. We can help you fully examine and evaluate your car if you like.
If you want an excellent stock Firebird, then talk to Craig (68tpls400). The qualify of his cars are excellent, he just does not ask enough money for them, lol
I would love some help. The car is in Turbotville, PA. which is about a 6 hour drive from upstate NY
Here are some things you can do to verify the condition of this car:
1. Get someone close to where the car is to look over the car and take 50-200 pics 2. Contact a company that specializes in checking cars out 3. We can help identify where to look on the car for good pics and then many of us can evaluate the car from the pics.
I purchase my vert state side and never left home. I can help you with info on shipping the car home, border issues etc.
For now..get someone to take the pics. It could be the seller but you need at least one independent person to look it over.
It looks like a beautiful car but every time I see a Chevy engine in a Firebird it turns me off. It isn't that Chevy engines are bad or that it won't move out nicely... they just belong in a Chevy. You will get that reaction a lot. Every time somebody asks you what's under the hood you will get that look. After you a few years you will wish you had a Poncho under the hood. Just my 2 cents.
Fly in, test drive, bring a check for what YOU want to buy it for ,plus some cash to add in case needed...drive back...but buy a round trip ticket , just in case...
Drove down and checked the bird out. The car is truly very very nice and looks professionally restored. No bondo and extremely clean. Motor has a mild cam and a nice lumpy rumble, but I just couldn't get past the Albatross of a motor. Still, I offered 19K and they refused. Left it at that and see if I hear from them, since the car is only been on the market for a week. Meanwhile I did come across this convertible but seems a bit over priced (33K with aYE 350) .....thoughts?
I've been finding a lot of quick buck Pontiacs out there, it seems to be a fad to grab a 67-69 350 body and throw a quick paint and interior job and ask for 25-30k, I saw a 69 350 done up like TA and asking price like 40k, I saw two guys who paid big bucks for faux firebirds, one had tri power with the tri power badge he thought was factory correct and another was a 68 with a 67 nose and the firewall ahd been hacked off with no heat just straight sheet metal, probably a wrecked bracket car. I've have seen a ton of GTO's that aren't GTO's asking for 50k, ooooo it has Judge graphics, big deal, there's a lot of 70 lemans with GTO noses, you have to run the VIN, below is a Pontiac vin checker, it changes over the years and below that I'll post the Pontiac block checker and you have to get the head numbers too. You really need to get under these cars and check as thoroughly as you can, there will be always something you missed but anything should have a good going over, jack it up, check the bearings, the brakes, did they just coat the undercarriage and frame?? why??
My 67 was a decent #3, it was a 6 auto someone put a 68 400 WZ block and matching drivetrain into with a 70 rear, I was a GTO guy, after buying I researched FB's and found in 67 they onnly made 6 RA 400 convertibles and none survive so I decided to turn it into a tribute, so far I have less than 20 in it including buying it.
I am always on the lookout for another bird to keep my all original 69 company in the garage. So discouraged by all the "resto mods" on Ebay. Bunch of parts thrown together, shiny paint and oversized wheels. Just not my thing. And the prices are simply ridiculous. I would rather have a plain jane original than any car with a built nom. Clones are fine as long as they are represented as such.Nothing against Chevy's. To the contrary... I like all cars of this era. But I have no desire for a big block chevy stuffed where it does not belong. Unrestored originals are the best in my book. Have been a member here for years and enjoy the posts. I have owned my 69 coupe for 25 years. Still a spot left in my garage for another. Lots of fun looking but finding the right one is certainly elusive... anyone have a good lead??

What would be on your wish list?

67 or 68. Need not be a 400 with lots of options. Must be original drive train. If not original paint, at least original color. Just a nicely preserved, honest car. My 69 is a less than desirable color, so I am not picky... just be real.
