Got a question for y’all. I was installing my gas tank after replacing the sending unit. The service manual said 7lb of torque. The torque wrench I have was to small to accommodate my socket so I used not the best judgement and over torqued one of the retaining strap bolts behind the bumper. I realized this when the bolt was suddenly crooked a little bit. When I backed it out a turn it straightened however, now the retaining strap is not snug against the tank as it should be. Not “loose†or hanging but about 1/16 of an inch gap. How can I remedy this being as how the bolt is in the body? Thanks

I did put the anti squeak rubber bands on there across the board. Thanks for your reply.
Did you tighten them up slowly changing sides to bring it up even? You can get an adapter to connect your socket to torque wrench. Make sure your threads are clean and lubricanted.

I did bring them up evenly keeping track on the turns and where the nuts were up on the bolts to avoid any damage or wrong sitting. I also ensured the retaining straps were in line with where they originally were as well to also ensure proper fitting. Negative on the lubricated bolts; they were pretty clean just some dirt knock off.
I contacted a classic muscle car restoration place here in San Antonio. Great guy and did not hesitate to give me the full info on what type of bolts they are and easy to replace.
I feel your pain. When we brought the wifes 69 out of bondage we started by pulling out the tank. I bought a repop since the car had not run in 27 yrs. well, that was a disaster. Tank was not quite the same, I had to put sheet rubber on top of the tank for it to fit right. One of the crappy bolts they gave me galled and stripped out. and I ended up cleaning up the old straps and using them. Take your time and you'll get it.

I need help, if anyone see's I'm going down the wrong road--Straighten me out!
Yeah, when I dropped the tank, there were two strips of what looked/ felt like felt that were attached to the top of the tanks secured with duct tape. They were in horrible shape and the tape pretty much fell off. Cleaned off all the dirt and debris from the top and vacuum it afterward to ensure a clean "work area". Cleaned off the new ones and put them on top where i felt the noise would come from or potential "contact points."

Bob, did you cover the whole top of the tank? You only want to cover the contact points otherwise you risk trapping dirt and moisture on top of the tank. Then it starts to rust. If you need to build it up just do it under the straps.
Cheers
