I bought a new speedometer cable in case it was the issue, but currently when on the road the speedo does not register. I removed the cable and turned the speedo by hand and it appears to move. I tried to turn the cable while attached to the transmission when in gear and it did not turn. i then removed cable from transmission and turned the cable from under car while detached from speedo and it turned, Im guessing there is no break in the cable. the only other test i was going to try was reattach cable to trans, take a ride and see if the cable is turning. any other ideas?

Take out the plastic gear and metal speedo housing on the trans to check condition. My guess is that either the plastic gears are stripped or the housing is bad...
I'm assuming this is done by removing the one nut on the outside of the housing?
I did install a new cable the old was not broken, I attached to the speedo and spun the cable by hand and watched speedo move so my guess is transmission side

I have seen some gears look good and not stripped, but if you look at them closely from the side you can see the teeth dipped where they come together. The one gear is in the housing that you can remove by taking out the small bolt on the side of the trans where the cable attaches, but the other gear is on the inside of the trans on the output shaft, you will have to remove the tail housing to get to it. Also the gears are color coded for the teeth count , but you can also just count the teeth.
this one is a very simple one, just make sure to actually measure the tires to get the most accurate results.
Ok I have a replacement gear I will try out next. I’m not tearing the transmission out this season for the speedometer. I just got it on the road.
Anyone try any gps converters. I have seen some that just connect to the stock speedometer cable and the other end powers up connects to gps and converts

there is an app for your phone to use as a speedometer also
To replace the speedo gear in the trans, you don't have to tear the trans apart or even remove it from the car, all you need to do is remove the driveshaft, raise the trans up a little, remove the crossmember and the tail housing of the trans
