I had a power steering issue with an old Mustang and tried getting around without the PS working. By coincidence, this was when I lived in So Cal.
DON'T DO IT
The steering is MUCH worse than manual steering. There is WAY too much effort required and your car will be dangerous.
If you would need to transport it to a shop - I would strongly recommend trailering it.
I have a 66 Mustang with manual steering. It really sucks. If your steering box is connected to pump (/w oil in it) and fan belt is off, it should be fine. There just no boost. Take the hoses off and steer with no oil in steering box, that would be an issue.
