Working on a '68 Firebird with a 400 HO motor. When we got it the clutch spring components were rusted away. Ordered the replacement parts. Not sure how it goes together. No diagram with the parts. Did find one diagram but it's not too clear. Can anyone point me toward a better one or how to hitch this up?
That spring attachment just prevents the assembly from rattling when the clutch is engaged. The return spring attachment is what he needs. On my GTO it's to a frame-mounted bracket. I can't get under my OHC car to see where it's attached, though I thought it was attached to a bracket on the subframe. For a V-8 car, it might be attached to the front starter support.
Your diagram is for a OHC 6. The smaller diagram shows the 8 cyl. This exactly how I found it off a 69 FB. The "return spring" to put the clutch back in neutral position is supplied by the pressure plate via the fork. Another spring to the frame would be weaker and redundant.

This is the view I am used to on my GTO. Note that the anti-rattle spring is labeled (incorrectly) as the return spring. As you can see, it would not return anything. The return spring is the one located on the frame bracket to the left arm of the counter-shaft.

That's actually the correct way to wear out the throw-out bearing.
