I understand it goes on one of the heater hoses towards the backside of the block on the passenger side to reduce chaffing between the two hoses. I have not found it reproduced, so think you have to buy some pipe foam at Home Depot and put it on there. That is the only thing I have heard is close. I have not done it yet to my car, but need to buy some one day.
I never thought about it being there to eliminate chaffing. I thought it was so the hose wouldn't rub on the block or head. I'm going to order 1ft of hose to fit this tomorrow. I'll let you know how it works. If it works good I'll send you a piece. I'm getting 1"ID x 1-11/32 OD x 12" long rubber hose. Thanks for the reply, You're car looks great and the pics are really nice.
By the way, I could be wrong about the reason...being wrong may have happened once before!
Anyway, here is a picture of a car that is original to this owner. It has been restored, but assume this is how it looked before restoration as it is the original insulator. It is more of a foam rubber. Also, I have seen this insulator on the opposite hose in some pictures.
Here is a not-so-nice shot of the original one on my 400 'vert:

Thanks for the great picture. Exactly what I needed. It looks like simple foam water pipe insulation. That's probably why they called it heater hose insulation. One would think that something as simple as this would be available. I'll let you know what I come up with.
Not positive but I think the cushion goes on the long hose that runs up to the water pump.
Firebob,
Craig and I were just discussing the same thing. Does the insulator go on the long heater hose or the short one? And, does the long heater hose run on the outside of the short one or vice versa? As you can see in the pictures above, both configurations are seen.
