I thought someone could benefit from my experience with the various under hood black spray can paints that are available. I got several gloss levels from NPD. I proceeded to prep my Firebird and spray them. They looked beautiful except for some areas that raised when the paint dried. The next day I sanded them out but the way they reacted to sanding suggested to me that they had not dried. After doing some diligence I got to the company that put the spray cans together. They were very helpful. They said that you must apply all the coats you want to waiting no more than 5 minutes between coats. After that they tell me the drying and recoat time is 2 weeks to 30 days. This is a very long time for paint to cure. So I think you will like the way the paint works but you need to be prepared to wait a very long time if you need to make any touch ups after you first spray the paint.
I have tried many different blacks and now only use SEM Trim black.
I usually do my prep the same each time.
1. De-rust if needed. Either Evapo-rust or wire wheel. 2. Good surface cleaner until the part is clean, clean, clean. Then keep your fingers off it. 3. Propane torch to sweet the metal out. Then let it cool a bit 4. Shake the hell out the can and spray a couple coats.
