I'm currently about 400 miles away from my tools & one of the mounting studs on my power steering pump sheered off inside the pump. I can't seem to find a machine shop nearby that will extract the stud from the pump, and I don't have the tools necessary to move my pulley to a new pump.
Would it be OK to drive this 1968 Firebird 400 around town with the power steering pump removed, and the power steering lines looped? I really need to get this car to the shop to begin some body work, this power steering pump is causing delays. I know on some cars the steering column is not strong enough to work without power steering, etc, so I figured I'd check beforehand.

You don't need the pump but you could bugger up the steering box by removing lines. Loop back? I cant see how. Can you get a magnet on a stick to get stud? PS has it's own drivebelt correct? take belt off and leave pump on and connected to steering box.

Thanks for the suggestions, especially the one about using a magnet to get the stud out. I spent my whole lunch break today trying to find a machine shop to extract this stud, but I never actually tried removing it myself. Tonight I finally gave it a try, and I was able to extract it with my fingertip in about 15 seconds . I bought a 3'' 3/8-16 stud at the local hardware store & was able to replace the broken post. All is well now!
I had a power steering issue with an old Mustang and tried getting around without the PS working. By coincidence, this was when I lived in So Cal.
DON'T DO IT
The steering is MUCH worse than manual steering. There is WAY too much effort required and your car will be dangerous.
If you would need to transport it to a shop - I would strongly recommend trailering it.

I have a 66 Mustang with manual steering. It really sucks. If your steering box is connected to pump (/w oil in it) and fan belt is off, it should be fine. There just no boost. Take the hoses off and steer with no oil in steering box, that would be an issue.

Just take the belt off. You can still drive it, but the steering will be hard. Fix this yourself. Get stud extractors. They're inexpensive. Worst case buy a new pump. There won't be much difference in cost.
Does anyone have a 350 Pontiac stock motor with the stock power steering pump attached. I need a picture of the set up, from top and bottom views.
I am ready to reinstall the power steering pump now that I have completed the rebuilt of the pump. I need to see where the thick washers and the mounting bolts go.
I may need to rebuild steering box as well but that will have to be a different day. I want to drive my car again.
