MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS

FIREBIRD, TEMPEST, TEMPEST CUSTOM, Le MANS, TEMPEST SAFARI, GTO

 
 

3-Speed Manual – Column Shift:

Standard on Firebird, Firebird 350, Firebird H.O., Tempest, Tempest Custom, Le Mans and Tempest Safari. Fully synchronized in all forward gears to provide quiet, smooth shifting throughout the driving range. A constant-mesh reverse gear reduces the possibility of gear damage when shift lever is moved to reverse. (See chart on page N-1)

3-Speed Manual – Floor Shift:

Standard on Firebird Sprint, and on Tempest, Tempest Custom and Le Mans equipped with the “sprint” option. (See pages A-8 and E-2.) Available at extra cost on Firebird, Tempest, Tempest Custom and LeMans Equipped with 1-BBL OHC 6. Features a new plunger-type, self-adjusting backup lamp switch for fast, positive operation of the backup lamps when shift lever is moved to reverse. Optional, extra-cost floor console is available for all Firebirds and for Le Mans Sports Coupe, Hardtop Coupe and Convertible, with Strato-bucket seats.

Heavy-duty 3-Speed Manual – Floor Shift:

Available with V-8 engine only. Standard on Firebird 400 and GTO. Optional at extra cost on

Firebird 350 and Firebird H.O., and on Tempest, Tempest Custom, Le Mans and Tempest safari equipped with 2- or 4-BBL V-8. This rugged, durable transmission is specifically designed to provide excellent performance under the most severe driving conditions. Special features include a new self-adjusting backup lamp switch, plus “Hurst-type” shift linkage for all. Optional, extra-cost console is available for Firebirds, Le Mans and GTO with Strato-bucket front seats. (Refer to chart on page N-1 for further details.)

4-Speed Manual – Floor Shift:

Optional at extra cost on GTO and all Firebirds, and on Tempest, Tempest Custom, Le Mans and Tempest Safari, except with 1-BBL OHC 6. Fully synchronized in all forward gears, with special gear ratios enabling the driver to more effectively utilize engine power in all forward gear positions, at all speeds and under varied driving conditions. Special “Hurst-type” shift linkage is standard on all. Extra-cost console is available on above models equipped with Strato-bucket front seats.
