Do Other Remote Mirrors Fit for 1968
Short answer: A 1968 GTO remote mirror will physically bolt on to a 1968 Firebird, but it is not correct — the difference is in the mounting base/pedestal. At about $100, an NOS remote mirror is a very good price.
Mounting-base casting numbers (visible on the bottom of the base):
- 1968 Firebird: 9792566
- 1968 GTO / Tempest: 9787847
- 1968 Full-Size: 9787846
Remote O/S mirror assembly part numbers (accessory numbers — only good if NOS or in the original box):
- 1968 Firebird (round): 9792565
- 1968 Firebird (rectangular): 3934583
- 1967 Firebird: 3899857
- 1968 Tempest: 9792564
- 1968 Full-Size: 9792562 (also same for ’65–’67, all exc. Firebird)
- 1968 Grand Prix: 9793985
Beyond the base, the assemblies differ in the gap between the bottom of the mirror housing and the top of the base, the distance from the back of the housing to the inside curve of the base, and cable length (which varies by model). Many dealers will claim “they are all the same” — they are not. Other mirrors will fit and work depending on how picky you are; just account for the vent window, cable length, and the control knob/trim.
