Backup Lights on a 1968

Short answer: The backup-lamp switch on a manual-transmission 1968 is adjusted per the 1968 Pontiac Service Manual (pg 12-22). (Automatics use the neutralizer-switch adjustment instead.)

Manual, column shift:

  1. Insert a 0.090″ gauge pin through the hole in the switch body and into the hole in the drive tang.
  2. Set the gearshift lever in reverse.
  3. Insert the switch drive tang into the shifter-tube slot with the tang touching the right-hand edge of the slot, and assemble the switch.
  4. Remove the gauge pin.

Manual, floor shift:

  1. Place the lever in reverse.
  2. Position the switch so the plunger is fully depressed against the lever.
