Overheating Engine
Short answer: Most overheating on an older Pontiac comes down to the basics — coolant, fan/clutch, shroud, a clean radiator, and correct timing — so sort those before spending on big radiators and exotic pumps. The best clue is when it overheats. Aim to keep the engine at or below ~195°F.
Overheats only at idle / sitting still (a low-airflow problem):
- Low/poor coolant or the wrong mix; a weak or wrong radiator cap.
- Bad fan clutch (engine off and hot, if the fan spins freely it’s bad).
- A weak aftermarket flex fan, or a missing fan shroud (the shroud is required for the fan to pull air through the radiator at idle, and the fan must sit at the right depth within it).
- A partially clogged radiator (have it flushed/rodded).
- Debris packed between the A/C condenser and the radiator.
- Missing lower air baffle / core-support filler panels, so the fan pulls air around the radiator instead of through it.
- A bad water pump / broken impeller (check this last).
After a big-engine swap (e.g., a 455): usually several things at once.
- Timing: if the vacuum advance is on a manifold source, “12°” can really be far more total advance — it runs hot. Disconnect and plug the vacuum advance, then set initial timing.
- Crank pulley: a larger-diameter pulley (common when a 455 comes from a big car) spins the water pump too fast, so coolant races through the radiator without cooling at idle — fit the correct smaller pulley.
- Air sealing: install the lower air baffle and the two filler panels between the core support and front bumper support.
- Heads/compression: small-chamber 400 heads on a 455 raise compression too far (detonation, broken pistons). Use late large-chamber heads (~95cc+) matched to your fuel.
- Confirm the water-pump thrust plate isn’t missing; a heavy-duty 4-row radiator helps in hot climates.
Heats up when moving / at speed (most often a partially clogged radiator, weak fan clutch, or a collapsing lower hose):
- Even a good-looking radiator can be ~30% clogged — have it professionally cleaned/rodded.
- The suction (lower) hose should have a spring inside, or revving sucks it shut.
- Full checklist: correct cast-iron-impeller water pump; a thermostat (160–180°, don’t omit it); good timing-cover and water-pump baffles (stainless if pin-holed); correct static and advance timing; clear coolant passages; an intact, flowing heater core; a clean radiator with straight fins; fresh hoses; the correct factory fan and pulley (A/C cars used smaller pulleys to speed flow); and the proper shroud (OHC-6 uses just a finger guard).
A good stock engine shouldn’t overheat — auxiliary fans are only needed for big-cam, high-compression, low-gear, high-stall combos.
Tried everything and still overheating? Suspect a small head-gasket leak near a water jacket — it pushes combustion gases into the coolant, forming steam pockets that overheat and blow off coolant, often with no other symptom. A simple test: disconnect the fan belts (so the water pump won’t turn), disconnect the top radiator hose at the radiator and hold it up vertically, and fill the radiator until you see water in the hose end. Cold, start the engine and watch — small bubbles (before the hose gets too hot to hold) indicate a bad head gasket.
