Front-end Rebuild – General

Short answer: A DIY front-end rebuild is straightforward, but a few steps are a pain: removing the rivets holding the upper ball joints (you’ll likely need an air chisel), and separating the tapered tie-rod ends (a pickle fork/spreader helps). You’ll also need a spring compressor.

Once it’s apart, the rest is easy. Count the turns as you remove each tie-rod end and thread the new ones in the same amount. With the right tools it’s a few hours; without them, a full day or more. Many do it themselves simply because they don’t trust shop “butchers” with their car.
