3-Speed Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 vs Powerglide

Short answer: A Turbo 400 needs a different (400) transmission crossmember; a cheaper route is a short-tailshaft Turbo 350, which uses your existing crossmember and is plenty strong for a 326. The benefit of either is the extra gear for acceleration (lower first plus a second gear) — the 1:1 final means no top-end gain.

Automatic Gear Ratios
Trans 1st 2nd 3rd
Powerglide 1.76 1.00
Turbo 350 2.52 1.52 1.00
Turbo 400 2.48 1.48 1.00
For the best of both worlds, some members go with a 200-4R to also gain overdrive.
