Dealer Technical Bulletin 68-T-8 – Console Shift Cable Protector on 1968 Tempest Two-Speed Automatic Transmission Equipped Cars
Bulletin 68-T-8 — Pontiac Motor Division Dealer Technical Bulletin, Section 7F, dated January 31, 1968. Attention: Service Manager.
Subject: Console Shift Cable Protector on 1968 Tempest Two-Speed Automatic Transmission Equipped Cars.
Short answer: On early production two-speed automatic 1968 Tempests without a revised crossmember or factory hose protector, a 3-inch piece of 5⁄8-inch I.D. heater hose should be bonded to the transmission rear crossmember flange to prevent abrasion of the console shift control cable.
A possibility exists that the console shift control cable may be abraded or scraped by a sharp flange on the transmission rear crossmember of early production two-speed automatic equipped 1968 Tempests.
This has been corrected in production by (1) using a revised crossmember whose sharp edges have been eliminated in the area where cable contact could occur, and (2) previous to introduction of this revised crossmember, a hose protector was added to the sharp flange area of the crossmember.
However, cars built during the early stages of production will not incorporate either of the above corrective measures. Because of this, it is recommended that in the event of an owner complaint of a worn or abraded shift control cable, a three-inch piece of 5⁄8-inch I.D. heater hose should be bonded to the crossmember flange in the area shown in the figure on the back of the original bulletin.
