Colors of Interior Parts with Parchment

Short answer: For a 1968 Parchment Custom Interior: the carpet should be black, the kick panels black, and the U-shaped door-jamb strip parchment.

Correct Interior Colors for 1968

Firewall Gloss Level

Short answer: Per Jim Mattison (PHS), the correct gloss level on the firewall area is 85% black.

Plastic Part Paint Stripping and Painting

Short answer: Don’t use chemical paint stripper on plastic — it softens the plastic and melts the edges. A mix of xylene and lacquer thinner removes most paint, but apply and wipe it off quickly or it can still damage the plastic.

For the chrome trim around the bezels: a Testors silver paint marker works (press it down to wet the felt well, and don’t stop mid-stroke or you’ll see a seam). Chrome vinyl is another option for a factory look that can be applied after the dash is painted.

Trunk Paint

Short answer: The trunk used GM spatter (spackle) paint, not a rubberized coating — and it needs a clear coat over it.

Tips: the surface must be a little rough or the (water-based) spatter paint sags and shows the smooth area; get it super clean; allow cure time between coats, especially the clear. Plan on ~4 cans of spatter and 1 of clear. Mask well (the clear goes everywhere), and be careful around the wheel wells/rear-window mechanisms. The marker-light assembly should show a little overspray.
