Aviation Gas

Short answer: AV gas is not a good street choice. It won’t burn pistons by itself, but modern AV gas is mostly unleaded/low-lead and formulated for altitude, so it gives little of the old octane benefit — and you’d have to re-jet to suit it. Higher octane only makes more power if you raise compression/advance to take advantage of it; a properly tuned engine makes the most power on the lowest octane that won’t detonate.

AV gas is untaxed and illegal to use on public roads. For a genuine high-octane need, buy purpose-built race fuel (Sunoco GT100, VP, Elf, Nutec; see racegas.com) rather than AV gas.
There’s no magic compression cutoff for pump gas — octane need depends on squish/chamber shape, timing, and even head material (iron vs. aluminum). A 10:1 engine can be set up to run on pump gas, but for an “average” street motor, going much above ~9.25:1 isn’t worth the added care and expense for the small gain.
