Original Transmissions for a 1967
Short answer: A 1967 could have come with any of these:
- 3-Speed Warner / Dearborn (Ford) heavy-duty manual — behind the 400 (and any HD 3-speed order)
- 3-Speed Saginaw manual
- 4-Speed Muncie (close or wide ratio) manual
- 4-Speed Saginaw manual
- 3-Speed Turbo Hydra-Matic 400
- 2-Speed Powerglide automatic
Every trans has model/casting numbers you can match against a rebuild book. Strength order of the GM 4-speeds: Saginaw (weakest, basically a 3-speed with a gear added) < Muncie < Borg-Warner. The Saginaw still survives abuse in a light car or with a numerically high axle, and came in many ratios (3.50, 3.11, 2.85, 2.54). Best advice: keep what you have until it breaks or gets noisy.

I have a 1967 Firebird 400 with 3-Speed Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 transmission. Were these transmissions painted black or were these transmissions natural finish? Mine was painted black and when the black was removed, there is a green primer underneath that is very difficult to remove. I fear the only way to bring to natural finish is to disassemble and dip the entire transmission outer case. Your information is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
There is a code stamped into the transmission in yellow. RW or PW. Any ideas what this means?
