Removing Engine
Short answer: It’s easiest to pull the engine and transmission together — remove the trans crossmember, radiator, and distributor, and it’ll come out (the fan makes it tight but usually clears).
- Mark the distributor rotor position before removing it, and don’t turn the engine afterward (or you’ll have to re-find TDC on #1). Or just reinstall the distributor after the engine is out.
- Use an intake-manifold lifting plate, or chains bolted front and rear with a load-leveler bar so you can shift the balance point.
- Lay blankets over the fenders to protect them.
- Many find it easier with the front clip off — it comes off in about an hour (unplug the lights; remove the radiator-to-fender gussets, the hood-latch-to-radiator bolts, the four bumper-support bolts, and the four core-support bolts).
