Short answer: The factory used 3M Scotchcal vinyl, and 3M vinyl (now with a built-in UV coating) is still the best choice decades later. These are vinyl appliqués, not decals.
- Don’t clear-coat over the vinyl: it expands and contracts at a different rate than the metal and paint, which promotes cracking under the clear and makes any future stripe repair a mess.
- Painting stripes instead of vinyl is your call, but factory vinyl is only about 2 mils thick — paint that thin is nearly transparent, and you won’t get the crisp edges of a die-cut vinyl stripe.
