1967 Pontiac Firebird Information

History
After GM forced Pontiac to drop John DeLorean’s Banshee concept car, Pontiac introduced the Firebird on February 23, 1967 to compete with the Chevrolet Camaro (September 29, 1966) and the Ford Mustang (April 1964). The Firebird borrowed the Camaro’s F-Body shell and the GTO’s A-Body drivetrain, but set itself apart with a different rear end, sub-frame, split-grille front end, six vertical quarter-panel louvers, and louver-style tail lamps — plus revised engine placement, front suspension, and reinforced rear springs.
It was offered as a hardtop coupe and a convertible in five “magnificent” versions:
Firebird OHC — 230-cu-in overhead-cam six, one-barrel, 165 hp. From $2,666 (coupe). Its toothed fiberglass-reinforced rubber cam belt was a world first.
Firebird Sprint — 230-cu-in OHC six, four-barrel Quadrajet, 215 hp, 10.5:1, heavy-duty clutch, floor three-speed. +$105.60.
Firebird 326 — 326-cu-in V-8, two-barrel, 250 hp. +$95.04.
Firebird H.O. — 326 H.O. four-barrel, 285 hp, dual exhaust, stiffer suspension, “H.O.” side stripes. +$169.70.
Firebird 400 — 400-cu-in four-barrel Quadrajet, 325 hp, dual scoops, heavy-duty everything. +$358.09. The optional Ram Air package made the scoops functional. +$263.
By the end of March 1967, over 33,000 Firebirds had sold — 77.8% with V-8s, 70.4% automatic, 16.7% with air conditioning, and just 0.5% with cruise control. The model year ended in September 1967.

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
On the 1967 Firebird the VIN is stamped on a stainless-steel plate riveted to the left door jamb, on the hinge-post facing. (1968–71 models moved it to a plate visible through the windshield on the driver’s-side dash.) It encodes the division, series, body style, model year, assembly plant, and sequential build number.

Body Tag Information
The Fisher body (cowl) tag records the model, body style, paint color, interior trim color, and date of manufacture. On 1967–69 cars it’s riveted to the firewall near the master cylinder. Reading it tells you what the factory originally built into your car.
