Backfiring Problem
Short answer: Cold-start backfiring usually points to the choke (sticking or not closing fully, causing a lean condition) and/or timing.
Figure out where it backfires:
- Through the carb = likely lean / choke not closing fully (which fits the “goes away when warm” symptom). Before starting cold, remove the breather and check that the choke snaps fully closed (a slight 1/8–1/4″ gap is normal); if it doesn’t, hose the linkage with carb cleaner.
- Through the exhaust = more likely ignition timing or a sticky exhaust valve.
Also confirm a recent tune-up and correct timing.
