Exhaust

Short answer: For a 350 convertible, the repro Long Branch manifolds (from Ram Air Restorations, ~$369, fit 1967–69, require the oil-filter adapter) flow as well as headers on a 350 without the header headaches. Factory “log” manifolds are cheaper and easier to find but lose some performance (though the 1969 Grand Prix 400 used log manifolds and was rated 350 hp).

Note the Flowmaster/header exhaust kits at Jegs and Summit reportedly don’t fit convertibles. A member researching a 2.25–2.5″ system for a 1969 350 convertible found you can piece one together from Flowmaster/Dynomax mufflers and pipes — but 2.25″ head pipes for stock manifolds and matching tailpipes (without a transverse muffler) were hard to source. (Prices were as of 1999.)

Short answer: Yes — the 350 and 400 D-port manifolds interchange (basically all 1965–70 Pontiac manifolds fit 1967–69 Firebird V8s; e.g., a 1973 350 pair fits a 1968 350). Only the Ram Air and H.O. “Long Branch” manifolds are hard to find (~$325/pair for ductile-iron repros, which are better than originals); all others run ~$100/pair. Beware used manifolds — 30 years of heat cycles leave many with stress cracks that are often worse than they look.

The Ram Air / H.O. manifolds use a special aluminum oil-filter adapter; the separate flange may vary between full-size Pontiacs and Firebirds.

Short answer: On a convertible the limiter is the pan brace — getting anything bigger than 2.25″ past it (sharing space with the transmission tailshaft and driveshaft) is tough, though some have fit 2.5″ with creative bending/ovalizing. For ~400 hp from a 350, 2.5″ won’t be a plug.

Keep the pan brace — even with subframe connectors, race-chassis builders retain it unless the car gets a full tube frame.

Short answer: The muffler-testing article you’re thinking of is Jim Hand’s “The Strong Silent Type” — extensive on-car testing of different brands (backpressure, sound level, 1/4-mile), plus tailpipe diameters and “H” vs “X” pipes.

For a complete system:

  • Walker/Dynomax — systems for headers or stock manifolds; looks more stock, and (per Hand’s testing) the pick for quiet plus performance.
  • Flowmaster — designed for headers; louder, a favorite for sound.
  • Gardner Exhaust (gardnerexhaust.com) — factory-system replicas in mild or stainless steel, for a stock look you can install yourself; expect to pay well.

Sound is a personal call — some love loud (glasspacks/Flowmasters), others want quiet.

Short answer: Headrests were optional on 1967 (code AS2) and 1968 (code 571). For 1969 they became government-mandated — in two styles, straight (early, same as 1967–68) and curved (later).

The 1969 upper seat frame is the same as 1967–68, so a 1969 frame is the easiest way to add headrests to a 1967–68 (use the padding and cover for your model). Note 1969s built before 1/1/69 still listed headrests as a charged option — they all got them, but the price sheet didn’t make them standard until then.

Short answer: Yes — the Long Branch (Ram Air III) manifolds bolt to a 350 block and are a big improvement over the stock “log” manifolds: better flow on any Pontiac V8, better ground clearance than headers, and a more reliable seal. The downsides are the oil-filter location (good solutions exist) and cost (~$400 new, plus ~$150–200 if you ceramic-coat them to preserve them).

Short answer: Welding a cracked cast-iron manifold is a real science — it likes to crack again if done wrong. The method:

  1. Drill the extreme ends of the crack to stop it from spreading.
  2. Grind a V into the crack, but not all the way through.
  3. Preheat the repair area cherry-red with a rosebud tip — keep the torch moving or you’ll blow a hole.
  4. While still red, weld with a high-nickel rod at lower amperage than usual (it’s already hot).
  5. Immediately peen the weld all over with the pointed end of a welding hammer.
  6. Cool it very slowly — bury it in at least 6″ of clean dry sand overnight, or cool it gradually in an oven over 24+ hours.

Short answer: The 1969 Ram Air III “Long Branch” cast-iron manifolds are a smart choice over headers — better flow than log manifolds, a more reliable seal, better ground clearance than headers, and less noise and underhood heat (headers cook the starter/solenoid in a Firebird).

  • Oil-filter clearance: they require the angled oil-filter adapter (~$75). Even then you typically slide the filter down the frame a few inches to clear; some drop the exhaust pipe or fit a remote filter. (These are factory manifolds, so it can be worked out at install — point it out to your exhaust shop.)
  • Porting: to match ported heads, open the manifold inlets — about .060–.090″ off the top of each port.
  • Repro: available from Year One (2.25–2.5″ outlets), though you may need to source the flanges separately; have them hi-temp/ceramic coated.
  • Skip extrude honing — it’s very expensive (custom coated headers would be wiser money). Add a starter/solenoid heat shield (as GM did with these manifolds).

Short answer: Members have installed the Flowmaster 2.5″ dual kit with crossover (from Summit and others) on a 1968 convertible. The 40-series mufflers fit, and the kit includes clamps and mounts that bolt to stock locations — but it comes with header flanges, so you’ll need a muffler shop to weld up the pipes from the exhaust manifolds (cheap reducers get you there). It sounds great: quiet at idle, aggressive when you get on it.

Note the convertible pan brace can limit pipe size (one member’s car was missing the brace, removing that obstacle). It’s also a natural time to install headers if you’ve considered it.
