Manifold Repair 101
Short answer: Welding a cracked cast-iron manifold is a real science — it likes to crack again if done wrong. The method:
- Drill the extreme ends of the crack to stop it from spreading.
- Grind a V into the crack, but not all the way through.
- Preheat the repair area cherry-red with a rosebud tip — keep the torch moving or you’ll blow a hole.
- While still red, weld with a high-nickel rod at lower amperage than usual (it’s already hot).
- Immediately peen the weld all over with the pointed end of a welding hammer.
- Cool it very slowly — bury it in at least 6″ of clean dry sand overnight, or cool it gradually in an oven over 24+ hours.
