Bare Metal Panel Preparation
Short answer: Clean the new bare metal with lacquer thinner to remove the machine-oil coating, then use a self-etching primer. Do all cutting and trimming before priming, and mask the areas you’ll weld.
After welding, clean the area with light sandpaper, then thinner, then self-etching primer (aerosol is handy) and paint. If you’re painting the whole car, it’s easier to just prime the panels now and leave the color for the full paint job.
