Dealer Service Information Bulletin 68-I-61 – Revised 1968 Firebird 6-Cyl. Automatic Transmission Extension and Driveline Damper
Bulletin 68-I-61 — Pontiac Motor Division Dealer Service Information Bulletin, Section 7F, dated April 22, 1968. Attention: Service Manager.
Subject: Revised 1968 Firebird 6-Cylinder Automatic Transmission Extension and Driveline Damper.
Short answer: A revised automatic transmission extension with a cast slot (instead of a machined hole) is now used on 1968 Firebird 6-cylinder automatics. When replacing an early extension (machined hole) with the new type (cast slot), new washers, Part No. 382588 [F-CX], must be used. Note also that the damper retainer used on 1967 cars is no longer used.
The revised extension incorporates a cast slot (see Fig. 7F-3 in the 1968 Pontiac Diagnosis Manual and the illustration in the scan below) instead of the machined hole used on early-production cars, for the attachment of the driveline damper.
In the event that a car with machined holes in the transmission extension has a new extension installed which has cast slots, it is essential that new washers, Part No. 382588 [F-CX], be used to provide adequate retention of the adaptor and mount to the transmission extension.
The damper retainer (between weight and mounting assembly) is no longer being used in production. The retainer was used in 1967 production cars only.
Torque specifications (see scan illustration):
- 30 lb. ft. torque (upper fasteners)
- 40 lb. ft. torque (lower fasteners)
