Dipstick Problem after Rebuild for 1967

Short answer: A dipstick that shoots out or clicks against the cam/crankshaft means the lower (inner) tube is bent or missing — replacing it requires pulling the oil pan (you may be able to remove the distributor and jack the engine, otherwise pull it).

Also confirm you don’t have an A/C-vs-non-A/C mismatch — A/C cars use a different dipstick and tube, so a short tube with a long stick (or vice versa) will read wrong. On level ground, 5 quarts should read about 1/2 quart low on the stick.
