TV Cable Purpose

Short answer: On an overdrive auto (TH350/200-4R/700R4) the TV (throttle-valve) cable tells the trans to downshift when you floor it (the “passing gear”) and also controls how firmly it shifts. You can technically drive briefly without it, but you won’t be happy — and plug its hole or it will leak fluid.

On a 700R4 or 200-4R a properly set TV cable is critical — an incorrect setting will quickly burn up the transmission.
