I'd start over. Get new material...then go elsewhere.
The way I see it, you can't fix the problem as it exists now, as it sounds like some material has been removed that's needed to cover some areas. Get new stock and then let a pro install it.
That's just my opinion. You'll be out some bucks but it'll be done right. And you could always still pursue reimbursement as Jim suggests.
