As you stated, the last 8 digits of the Vehicle's VIN number, preceded by the number "2" are stamped vertically along the front passenger side of the block, immediately adjacent to the timing cover. This practice was started in late model-year 1967. The characters of this number are 1/8" high, as opposed to the 1/4" tall characters of the engine series and 3/8" block code. They are tough to locate while the engine is in the car, especially if the car has more than a few thousand miles on it. If you can not find this munber, it is possible that the motor in your car was originally built prior to 1968 and was transplaned into your car some time during its past. Check the casting date of the block.
The engine series number was used internaly at the engine shop. It was recorded on the paper documentation (build sheet) usually found under the rear seat springs, but will have no bearing on the VIN of the car.
As far as I know, it was not until 1972 or 1973 that the type of motor installed in the car was coded into the VIN.
