I had an original cowl induction hood for a 69 Camaro in my garage for 10 years. I kept it on it's side. Kept it facing the wall with soft insulation to protect the contours. I used a bunch of bungy cords to keep it in place. Nothing could hurt it. I auctioned it on eBay and got a 'pretty penny' for it. When I shipped it I went down to the nearest body shop and got a hood box for it. I had it boxed up perfectly. I took it to the truck trailer myself and helped load it and strap it to the wall of the trailer. Somehow, after they unstrapped it and before they removed it from the trailer it fell over and the fork truck ran right over it! I had it insured for $2000. They squeeled like pigs about it but had to pay up.
