Four bolts hold the axle retaining plate to the end of the rear housing if you have the original BOP 8.2 rear. They are accessed after removing the brake drum. To clear the work area, I remove the brake hardware first.
When the axle shaft is out, before the bearing is removed, check to see if the bearing's inner race spins or slides on the shaft. After the bearing is removed, look for grooves on the shaft. Check the splines at the diff end.
There is a frequently omitted axle seal gasket that I always replace.
