Just bought a new starter from autozone and installed tonight. Started with 1 shim and it ground. Went to 2, then 3 then 4 then 5 and now 6 shims. It seems to get better with each shim but it still sounds like its whining or dragging. Is it normal to have that many shims in a starter? We have a 162 tooth flexplate on our 76 400 engine. The old starter (which quit the other night) only needed 3 shims. Should we take the starter back and have them test it? or should we keep adding shims?
