Yes to degreeing the cam, and also tried it at 4 deg advanced with similar results. If I start at 10 deg ignition timing, I only get 10-12" vacuum with a lot of misfire and hesitation. If I wind it up to 40-50 degrees, vacuum will climb to 16" at most at idle. It will run better but still with the same symptoms. I thought at first the balancer slipped, but it checks OK at TDC. Never thought to check timing on the old cam before I took it out.
