"Melting pot" means assimilate into the common culture. Not isolate yourself and retain your homeland's culture.

What gets me is that people who are generations removed from their ancestral roots suddenly decide to "become" the heritage that their ancestors left behind, whether willingly or unwillingly. If you like that culture, go join it...in the ancestral homeland.

My ancestors emigrated and began a life here with nothing. They wanted to be, and became, Americans. That is why they came here. Although they kept in touch with relatives in the homeland, they never desired to move back nor pushed aside our culture in favor of their own native culture. Their children were proudly taught English and were expected to use it.
