I don't mind the whitewalls, as long as they were available on the actual car. For instance, they're not too bad looking on a 69 Trans Am because most of the factory photos of 69 T/A's show them with whitewalls. But the whitewall stripe has to be right width (I believe it was a 3/8" stripe) in order to look good. Anything wider and it looks tacky.
The 1968 Hurst/Olds is another car that looks ok with whitewalls (that was only tire available on the 68 H/O). I've seen white letter tires on a 68 H/O, and it just doesn't look right.
One of the worst applications of whitewalls I've ever seen are on a 73 Trans Am, which was actually available (I believe they were radials), and they really look wrong on those cars.
