Check for a plastic bag melted to the exhaust pipes (really stinks!), or for oil leaks onto same. If you're not abusing the clutch, you shouldn't smell anything. Since you said you smelled it most from a stopped position, the movement may cause something to dump onto the exhaust.
One more thought, maybe a short in the reverse light wiring?
