I am going drag racing again next year with my Firebird just run what you brung meets about 5 times a year and my car is not a daily driver I only do 500 miles a year. I hope to get a couple of things sorted out over the winter ready for next spring one is a posi but the other is my factory shifter.
Now as you know these factory shifters are not good for changing manually for drag racing! It's too easy to miss a gear by shifting straight from 1st to D or into neutral. So as I can hang on to the changes until 5,000rpm as it's changing about 4.500rpm at the moment as I have already fitted an adjustable modulater which holds the gear change for plus or minus 2mph.
I want to fit a B & M shifter maybe a quick silver or similar. The 67 Firebird uses a rod to change gear as opposed to the 68 and 69 which use a cable. I know I will have to convert it to a cable shift using the bracket that bolts to the transmission pan.
My car has a TH350 instead of the Powerglide and it has been modded by fileing the detent on the shifter so I can select all 3 gears manually.
Has anyone fitted an aftermarket shifter to their 67 Auto Firebird if so which one?
