Does the fender match up to the hood length? If it does, the fenders are okay and the frame to bumper brackets have probably been replaced in the wrong position like Amervo says. Most accident damage results in a gap to small and damage to the front fenders. These brackets are not that sturdy. Don't even tap something while parking!
My fading memory thinks that my 1968 coupe I bought new had a 3/4" or so gap ahead of the fenders that was detailed with the plastic filler part on each side. Are you missing the filler parts? If this part is missing, it would cause the gap to look enormous. The filler part is a plastic piece that fools the eye into not seeing the gap by closing the space behind it.
