Disconnect the wire leading to the sending unit, shoud be a connection in the trunk. I forget just now which way it works, but if you ground the wire to the gauge it will either read full or empty, and just the opposite if dissconnected (no ground.)
As far as I know you have to replace the entire sending unit, you can't get any parts for it.
