normally you need to have the trans off to use a wire type feeler gauge to measure the clearance. if you go about halfway down this page on my site you can see me doing the clearance measurement. i am sure there may be other ways that a seasoned mechanic may use without removing the tranny but this is the way i know. http://www3.telus.net/68bird/engine_install.htm
