there are some of course, I hear about them , but after my 4 hikes in the rain forests , i still have to see ONE mosquito...but I have not been during rainy season yet... "other critters", like snakes and poison frogs (Dogs usually bite them , will foam up around mouth and can die) exist , but just dont touch what you dont 'know', dont fan thru the grass with your hands looking for snakes (anywhere in the world)... here a couple of pics of Rolf when we took two different hikes , you can see how we were dressed...
