Do a trial fit and make sure you don't have any large gaps. You can bend the lip a bit if you do. I've used the gasket and a thin bead of Polygrip on each side with no problems on close to a dozen engines, as long as the lip is flat. Tighten the bolts evenly, about two turns at a time, and watch the gasket so that you stop before overtightening. Your choice.
