I use Eastwood's Detail Gray for items like these. Looks just like the clean metal afterwards, but now they are protected. I also sprayed all my fuel and brake lines for the same reason.
I'll give that a try thanks, I just went ahead and put it all in primer and boxed it up for now that way it won't rust, if I end up using it or not it'll be protected
