MT, anything you drill that is not hard like a metal always has the chance to "break out" in the back as the bit get close to coming through.

Drill slow,
maybe back where the whole will be with a block of wood,
use a small pilot drill
dont finish hole from one side- meaning - the last little bit of drilling to be done should be drilled from the opposite side for last little bit
