I feel your pain. When we brought the wifes 69 out of bondage we started by pulling out the tank. I bought a repop since the car had not run in 27 yrs. well, that was a disaster. Tank was not quite the same, I had to put sheet rubber on top of the tank for it to fit right. One of the crappy bolts they gave me galled and stripped out. and I ended up cleaning up the old straps and using them. Take your time and you'll get it.

Bob, did you cover the whole top of the tank? You only want to cover the contact points otherwise you risk trapping dirt and moisture on top of the tank. Then it starts to rust. If you need to build it up just do it under the straps.
