The plan it to take the Firebird to Gettysburg for the POCI next week. In the past long drives like that ended up with a very stiff right leg from having to have a foot on the gas pedal all the way there. I finally gave in to the idea of an aftermarket cruise system. A friend put a Dakota Digital unit in his '68 Camaro and was pleased with the unit and install process so I jumped right in and ordered one. At first glance the unit is a little intimidating. There is a lot of wiring and connectors to sort through. The install took about eight hours and revealed that the speed sensor could not be located directly to the transmission as shown due to the shape of the tunnel. A quick call to the listed number and I was told that I had two options, a different sensor that attaches to the drive shaft, or a short cable which would allow it to swing to the side. I ordered the short cable and it arrived in 5 days.
The first test drive assured me that the work was worth it. One small adjustment in cable length and all is good.
The control box is noticeable under the hood but could be placed in a more hidden area with a little work. The switch, incorporated into the turn signal lever looks period correct (I don't ever recall seeing a first gen bird with factory cruise).
Now if I only had A/C the drive to PA would be very comfortable. Maybe by next summer!
