I have a 1968 Firebird 400 engine that I have had for 20+ years. I bought it in California and it has been stored inside ever since. It is a YT 568612 Code (400 automatic), Block Casting 9790071 (1968 400), and Date Code B158 (Feb 15, 1968). It also has a Van Nuys (Los Angles) assembly plant code in the partial VIN 28L102428 stamped on the block.
I'm hoping this forum may have somebody on it that has this car or knows how to track down a VIN as I'd really like to see if the Firebird 400 car that this engine originally came in still exists and if the current owner would like this engine in order to have a numbers matching vehicle.
The car VIN should be 223378L102428 if it is a coupe or 223678L102428 if it is a convertible.I tried Pontiac Historical Society but they said they don't have data that could tell me if the car is still around.
Hi there,
The no. stamped on the block is the "Engine Unit no." YT 568612" Compare that to the billing history you get the VIN for the car. See attached
The PHS guys cannot search by "Engine Unit no.", however, it's on the build sheet /w VIN on the PHS report. The data is on mircofishe so it has to be searched manually.
